serial number 42-63356, she was initially named the "Georgia Peach"
since the plane's commander ( Major Millar) was from Georgia. After
flying a number of missions from China, my fathers crew was sent
back to the U.S. to begin training for the atomic bomb missions.
Col. Tibbets later selected other crews to continue the atomic bomb
mission training, and my my father's crew were made trainers of new
B-29 crews.
She was delivered to the USAAF on 2/13/44. She departed Smoky Hill
AFB on 4/15/44 destination India and arrived on 5/4/44. She flew
eight combat missions and 7 Hump missions and returned to the U.S.
as a weary on 12/11/44 and was assigned to Roswell. His B-29 was
later re-named "Lassie" and "Valkyrie Queen". She was scrapped as
surplus at Pyote on 12/21/49.
My late father
Nicholas J. Mike flew as a radar bombadier on the B-29 named the
"Georgia Peach" with the 468th Bomb Group, 793rd Bomb Squadron -
